View from the Chair – November

The year is fast approaching to a close and the last three months have been at such pace that it’s only when I look back on what we have achieved as a business group that it makes sense as to why the Christmas break will be so well deserved!

October is always a key month for us as we host our Great British Day Out. As Chairman but also as a participant on the day, I was so impressed at the level of support and presence of our valued sponsors and membership, presenting a real united front as a British business community and its guests. I know that BBG General Manager, Kathy Brennan, and the business team really appreciated everyone’s involvement, enthusiasm and support in the life cycle of the event. For those that weren’t able to attend and haven’t yet seen the highlights, here is a link to a montage of the day produced by our videography partner The Studio: https://vimeo.com/368058953

There wasn’t even time to reflect before we were straight into a busy week of business briefings and the Sunday after the GBDO, we hosted the One Year to Go event at the Capital Club with the DIT Expo team. BBG members heard first hand from Laura Faulkner, OBE, Commissioner General and Project Director, UK at Expo 2020, who detailed the opportunity for British companies to be involved with a focus on UK excellence on a world platform for commerce and relationship building with over 190 countries to be represented. The theme is “Innovating for a Shared Future” with a focus on AI, Education, Hospitality and an overarching consideration of harnessing “mind, man and machine”. You can follow the programme @ukpavilion2020 and we will be distributing the latest news and information, proudly working with the UK Expo team and DIT, to ensure our membership is feeling informed and as enthused as we are for hosting Expo in this region.

Our Christmas Ball invite is live and we only have a few places available, with the majority of the tables booked before the invitation had been shared! If you have intentions of attending this year then I would urge you to contact the business team at booking@bbgdxb.com We are delighted that this year’s event has been so popular and look forward to seeing many of our valued members and partners on the night and our heartfelt thanks goes to the General Counsel Andrew Jackson and his family for providing their garden for us to “dance the night away”! We do have a couple of sponsorship opportunities left should you wish to showcase your company at this prestigious event, please contact Charmaine Dylanco in the BBG business team for more information.

Our business briefings and networking events calendar included a focus on the Energy Sector and our popular Member Spotlight Networking Series, sponsored by FedEx Express provided the opportunity to hear from our members as they pitched their company to an audience of members and non-members. I have also heard that the networking has resulted in great introductions within the membership and within the DIT.

My advice would be, don’t miss the exclusive to BBG Henk Potts lunch this Monday, November 25th! Henk is the Director of Global Research for Barclays Private Bank and he will share his views on the effects of macroeconomic changes on financial markets, with a focus on the impact of Brexit on the UK economy during a business lunch with refreshments. Please visit our events listings for all of our upcoming events: http://bbgdubai.org/events

As part of our commitment to the membership to be “useful” we have continued to build collaborations with the other international business councils and groups in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and through our new membership with the Global Business Network, an initiative from the British Chamber of Commerce, we are working closely with BBG Abu Dhabi in forging new relationships with UK Chambers of Commerce as they look to the UAE for their own international trade expansion and of course Expo 2020!

Finally, for now (!), thank you to those that have already completed the membership survey! We will be sharing the results and insights within the membership and the output will shape our plans for 2020 and beyond. I am sure you are all in planning stages too for next year so please include the BBG as a source of information and opportunities related to Expo activity, International trade opportunities and a go-to for content sharing, key events and providing access to key personnel. If you aren’t already following us on LinkedIn please do here for the most up to date content.
