There’s nothing like an AGM to focus the mind! A time for reflection and to understand where we are, where we have been and where we are going. With the greatest of thanks to our members, sponsors, annual partners and of course our dedicated members of the board, we are in a position of great opportunity and I’d like to share my own observations of our 31st BBG AGM!
The AGM took place at the very prestigious setting of the Mina A’Salam hotel, part of the Madinat Jumeriah Group. The Jumeriah Group is a great supporter of the BBG and one of our most established annual partners. It was – as always – great to see so many members attend the event and the pre-event networking enabled the usual catch ups and new introductions – a key benefit of the BBG.
Along with our member guests, we were delighted to have the presence of Dubai Chamber Representative Mohammed Bin Sulaiman. It is with great pride that our membership sees this support from Dubai Chamber, first hand.
As part of the AGM, I took the audience through the current position of the BBG, its value proposition, our membership demographics and our focus for the months ahead.
Andrew Robinson, BBG Board Director of Finance, presented the financials transparently, showing that whilst we have experienced a difficult year in line with the current financial climate, we have shown a decrease in attrition and have strengthened relationships with our sponsor partners to continue to provide our members with a base for great networking and business opportunities. We are also incredibly grateful to KPMG for its full financial audit of the BBG, providing a solid platform from which to plan and progress as commercially-minded as possible.
Following the main presentation, everyone was invited to a sit down lunch during, where we were delighted to host Her Majesty’s Consul General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates Andrew Jackson. Andrew spoke with such enthusiasm for the upcoming Expo and the work already underway to make it a success. Andrew talked about the exciting opportunities and possible collaboration Expo presents for UK companies based in the UAE.
Trevor McFarlane, Founder and Chief Executive of Emerging Markets and Intelligence and Research (EMIR) was next to take the stage and impressed us all with his macroeconomic knowledge and insight on current world affairs, pertaining to conducting business here in the UAE as a British company.
My main observations of the AGM were mainly around the connections being made cross-industries. So many members who attend, either representing their own business or as an employee, share the view that the AGM presents a rare opportunity to meet with such a cross section of industries sharing such common business goals and indeed obstacles.
The BBG’s focus remains to provide its members with a platform for information exchange, business contacts and to be the first choice for British businesses in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, however this focus is now laser sharp and we will take all the member feedback and insights that we received at the AGM to better shape our value proposition…. Watch this space!!

BBG Predicts Resurgence in Traditional Networking for 2020
We continue to see higher levels of attendance at our networking events month on month, suggesting that businesses are revisiting the opportunity and value in the direct relationship between face to face networking and business success.
The year is fast approaching to a close and the last three months have been at such pace that it’s only when I look back on what we have achieved as a business group that it makes sense as to why the Christmas break will be so well deserved!
A very warm welcome to the British Business Group!
We are a not-for-profit business group open to UK registered companies or individuals from the UK with existing or potential business interests in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Our aim is to provide our members with early access to relevant opportunities and regional market intelligence. We also host an average of 60 networking and thought leadership events every year.
We welcome all companies and individuals from the UK with business interests in Dubai and Northern Emirates to join us.
If you are reading this in Dubai, then it would be impossible not to realise that yes, Summer really is here! With the soaring temperatures and suffocating humidity it’s no wonder that so many British expats leave in their 1000s for cooler climates in July and August. Many would confess to believing that business slows down in these months but we can confirm, from our own observations at the BBG, that this is certainly not the case this year!
