Ramadan Mubarak!

This year marks my 21st Ramadan as a resident of Dubai. At whatever the time of year this holiest of months falls, it strikes me how friends, family and colleagues of all denominations find time to catch up, chat, compliment each other and generally reflect on the blessings we are all bestowed with.

So, Ramadan wishes to all BBG members and stakeholders who are observing the Holy month. And even those of us who are not observing should take the time to be grateful for all the opportunities that the UAE, our chosen home, gives us. This month is, above all, a time when we should appreciate and show our appreciation for all that we have through giving back to the community in some way - there are a number of charitable initiatives around Dubai and getting involved with any of them is easy. For example, to volunteer with Dubai Cares, all you need to do it visit dubaicares.ae/en/volunteer

You could even do your bit by putting a Ramadan fridge outside your home if you live in a villa or townhouse so you and your neighbours can fill it with food and drinks for the labourers. You might also put out a clothes donation box. You could SMS the word Iftar to 6025 to donate Dh20 to a needy person or even call Dubai Municipality's Food Control Department on 04 206 4205 or 04 206 4280 to volunteer by picking up the leftover food from people’s homes and restaurants, and distributing it to families and individuals in need.

On Wednesday the 8th of May our very own Director of Government Relations, Adel Awadhi, once again opened his own home to members of the BBG, friends, Government officials and business contacts for a wonderful Suhoor.
Suhoor is an Islamic term referring to the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before fasting (sawm), before dawn during or outside the Islamic month of Ramadan. The meal is eaten before fajr prayer.

Back to business now; our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the next milestone event for our organisation and I’m going to be proud to address voting members on Thursday 13th June at Annual Partner Jumeriah’s Madinat Jumeriah property.
I will be highlighting and celebrating the tremendous hard work of our Business Team and your Administrative board. Hard work that is resulting in some interesting metrics:
* increasing membership acquisition
* reduced membership attrition
* fewer but higher quality/relevant events as per member requests
* continued and additional member partnerships which stabilise our financial position as a not-for-profit organisation.

Many of you will have heard me say before that the commodity we are aiming to attract - as a membership organisation - is the ‘time’ of our members. Accordingly, it is our duty, as your appointed board, to deliver a clear value proposition. Some feedback I am receiving strongly suggests that the tide is turning and delivery is on track through our #member4member campaign. Please do take the time to come to the AGM next month and hear more about the journey we are steadily navigating in the run up to EXPO2020!

As I write, I have just left the amazing new look BBG office. This is an absolutely incredible transformation courtesy of Broadway Interiors who have donated weeks of their time, expertise, onsite labour, materials and even garnered the support of their suppliers to give back to their community. Chris cleverly captured the energy of the BBG team and translated it into a workspace that is not only British themed, but is also on point with our refreshed strategy and approach.

Its modernity and the flexibility of its open space mirror our aspirations while reflecting our commitment to sustainability and innovation which are becoming ever more important in today’s workplace. We are absolutely thrilled with the new office and will officially launch it to the world on Tuesday the 21st of May after which it will be open for business to welcome members and other stakeholders who wish to meet with the BBG team So that’s it from me for now and again wishing you all and your loved ones a peaceful and blessed Ramadan.

Looking forward to catching up at the AGM!

View from the Chair – November

The year is fast approaching to a close and the last three months have been at such pace that it’s only when I look back on what we have achieved as a business group that it makes sense as to why the Christmas break will be so well deserved!

View from the Chair - No Summer Slowdown here!

If you are reading this in Dubai, then it would be impossible not to realise that yes, Summer really is here! With the soaring temperatures and suffocating humidity it’s no wonder that so many British expats leave in their 1000s for cooler climates in July and August. Many would confess to believing that business slows down in these months but we can confirm, from our own observations at the BBG, that this is certainly not the case this year!
