It’s been a busy start to the year! Members and friends of BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates have already enjoyed some cracking events for 2019!
Personally, I really enjoyed the Planned Power workshop, run in early January by our Focus Chair for Personal Development, Blake Sergeant, where a group of 40+ of us were treated to a valuable session on ‘finishing your year before it starts’. This appealed to me personally and delivered in every sense. I can honestly say I’m following some basic but innovative steps advised by Blake and starting to see some green shoots. That’s all I’m saying – you should check it out yourselves!
This event was followed by the first HMA [Her Majesty’s Ambassador] briefing for 2019, part of our continued Ambassador Series. HMA to Jordan, Edward Oakden CMG, was joined by our very own HM Trade Commissioner for the Middle East, Simon Penney, to discuss and share opportunities to, within and from Jordan for British Businesses in the region. A lot of development in the areas of healthcare and financial services abound. HMA was also joined by members of the Department of International Trade [DiT] from Jordan, who very kindly issued an open invitation for BBG members to make contact with their offices for more detailed information about such opportunities. If you’re interested to know more, the BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates Business Team can initiate contact, so please do feel free to reach out on 04 3970303 or by email to email@example.com
The next HMA to join us as part of this hugely popular and useful series will be HMA to Iraq, Jon Wilks CMG, who will host our members for a business breakfast at Jumeirah Emirates Towers next month. This Ambassador Series initiative further endorses a key tenet of our group’s collaborative value proposition, with our colleagues within Her Majesty’s Government promoting trade, market opportunities and intelligence, and I would urge you all to take advantage of these sessions. Find out more and sign up now for the Breakfast Briefing with HMA to Iraq here.
Whilst on the subject of collaboration (again!) I am pleased to say that we are working on further initiatives alongside our friends and colleagues at BBG Abu Dhabi that will benefit our joint memberships. All of these supported by our amazing partners, without whom much of this activity would not be possible. If you’d like to know more about becoming a partner or sponsor of our Group, or for our flagship events, including our Annual Golf Day and Dinner (the date for which has just been announced as 7th March), please do get in touch with the Business Team on the contact details above.
For those of you interested or connected with the burgeoning healthcare sector I hope you had a fabulous Arab Health 2019. I write this on the day that 600 individuals are being hosted on the lawns of the British Embassy for an Arab Health reception! Judging by this and the traffic I think it was a pretty big deal!
That’s all from me this time. For those who kept to their New Year’s Resolutions - well done! January seemed a rather long month for me to abstain from anything in particular, so it is February that will curb any excesses for me! See below for our upcoming events and wishing you all a continued positive start to 2019.
Catch up soon,

A very warm welcome to the British Business Group!
We are a not-for-profit business group open to UK registered companies or individuals from the UK with existing or potential business interests in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Our aim is to provide our members with early access to relevant opportunities and regional market intelligence. We also host an average of 60 networking and thought leadership events every year.
We welcome all companies and individuals from the UK with business interests in Dubai and Northern Emirates to join us.
If you are reading this in Dubai, then it would be impossible not to realise that yes, Summer really is here! With the soaring temperatures and suffocating humidity it’s no wonder that so many British expats leave in their 1000s for cooler climates in July and August. Many would confess to believing that business slows down in these months but we can confirm, from our own observations at the BBG, that this is certainly not the case this year!
There’s nothing like an AGM to focus the mind! A time for reflection and to understand where we are, where we have been and where we are going. With the greatest of thanks to our members, sponsors, annual partners and of course our dedicated members of the board, we are in a position of great opportunity and I’d like to share my own observations of our 31st BBG AGM!
This year marks my 21st Ramadan as a resident of Dubai. At whatever the time of year this holiest of months falls, it strikes me how friends, family and colleagues of all denominations find time to catch up, chat, compliment each other and generally reflect on the blessings we are all bestowed with.
