View from the Chair - Where did the year go ?

Can you believe it’s only six weeks to Christmas?! Our focus now is all about the upcoming festive season, and it’s been a busy few weeks to get us to this point!

Let's start from a social perspective … In the last month, we've had both the Battle of the Business Councils Golf Day and the Great British BBQ.

Over 100 golfers joined us for a fantastic day at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, culminating with a stunning al fresco evening dinner overlooking the course. Here at BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates, we fought hard and retained our ‘friendly rivalry cup’ against BBG Abu Dhabi, but it was the Canadian Business Council that stole the show and claimed the title. I’d like to extend a big thank you again to our event sponsors: Barclays, Emirates, JacksonMSV, Pro Partner Group, Jumeirah, Virtuzone, DSV, Getty Images, IP Global, Renaissance Downtown Hotel, MMI, Dubai Creek Golf Club and Ego Digital Marketing, without whom the day would not have been possible.

Our Great British BBQ – not to be confused with the Great British Day Out, which we’re currently planning for next February on the British Embassy lawns – brought families and friends together for a chilled out family day on the gardens of Hilton JBR. The children thoroughly enjoyed the bouncy castle and apple bobbing, while the adults indulged in delightful British food and beverages. Yet again, this is an event that would not have taken place without the support of sponsors, and I’d like to thank Hilton Dubai Jumeirah, Emirates, Flying Elephant, Crown Relocations, Pink Elephant Kids, Custard, and Access All Areas for all of their efforts.

On the business front, we've had a number of niche networking events over the last month, including an exclusive BBG Dubai & AmCham Dubai GITEX members-only kick-off breakfast, an EdTech trade mission networking evening with Scottish Development International (SDI) and, last week, together with our colleagues at BBG Abu Dhabi, a business briefing with HM Ambassador to the UAE, Patrick Moody.

The newly implemented operating model and turnaround strategy for the BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates business team are already starting to show signs of strong growth demonstrated by an uptick in new member applications and a significant slowdown in member attrition that has crept up over the past three years or so. Thank you to all of you who have given the team valuable and welcome feedback about the drift away from relevance. As I’ve said many times before, the commodity that we, as a membership organisation seek, is the time of our members. That time spent must be focused on our core value proposition of bringing to our members: events of relevance, market intelligence, and access to early market opportunities.

A recent example of this is the partnership with the World CEO Forum which allowed our BBG Dubai members to attend the prestigious two-day event free of charge – the dirham cost of which equates to a one year BBG Dubai membership fee and the value of which is much, much higher. I was delighted to hear that we had 30 members take advantage of this offer on the first day of the event and 35 on the second day. Real value for members!

Our collaborative efforts also continue to move forward. You may have seen a joint email statement from myself and Nick Cochran-Dyet of BBG Abu Dhabi, announcing our efforts to pool resources and work more closely together for the wider membership. If you haven’t see this email – which highlights another opportunity for members to showcase themselves –  you can read it here

That brings us up to date and, looking forward, I’m excited to announce that, in honour of Jumeirah Group’s long standing BBG membership and to show our support for a greatly valued Platinum sponsor, our much acclaimed Great British Christmas Ball will be held at the newly refurbished Jumeirah Beach Hotel. We are very much looking forward to being able to celebrate another year with our colleagues, friends and loved ones in an incredibly glamorous setting under the stars overlooking the iconic Burj Al Arab. You should have received the details by email but, if not, you can find out more and book your place here – and hurry, we expect the usual fast sell-out to the biggest social event of the year!

I wish you all a great month ahead!

View from the Chair - In the family way…

Over the years – particularly from a social perspective – I have often heard the British Business Group Dubai & Northern Emirates being described as a ‘family’. In the context of human society, a family (from the Latin: familia) is a group of people related either by consanguinity (by recognised birth), affinity (by marriage or other relationship), or co-residence (as implied by the etymology of the English word ‘family’).
