We promised a cracking start to the business event season and it has certainly been that. This feedback is already telling your business team that the mix and balance between business and social appears to be just right.
In the last couple of weeks we were honoured to be joined by a variety of distinguished guests, from our panel of trail-blazing panel of Emirati ladies on Emirati Women’s Day, and the new HM Consul General, the EXPO 2020 team and HM Dept for International Trade (DIT) for our Expo update, to Jasper Hope, the CEO of Dubai Opera for the iconic cultural institution’s second anniversary, and not forgetting the most important people – all of you loyal members and your guests who have taken the time out to join us and kickstart the new season in the city.
I personally attended our unique networking event with BBG Dubai member, Dubai Opera, to celebrate their second anniversary of their opening. Dubai Opera CEO, Jasper Hope, regaled us with successes of the eclectic programme that is Dubai Opera. Catering to all tastes and genres, the client experience there really is quite incredible. We were delighted to be able to host a prize draw that was won by a gentleman who decided to join our Group that very night! Anand Vengurlekar won two tickets to the upcoming spectacular ‘Never Mind the Opera’
Then a real treat ensued. We were all invited into the main auditorium for a sneak preview of the final dress rehearsal of Carmen, which had its opening performance the very next day. Our thanks again to BBG Dubai member, Dubai Opera, for arranging such a wonderful #member4member experience.
Do now keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events that your business team have been working flat out to execute. Along with this work, we are also reaching the culmination of our strategy planning over the summer months, and can’t wait to share more detail over the next few weeks. Collaboration is the key tenet of our value proposition - ‘enabling our members to succeed’ - and I’m pleased to report the collaborative arrangement between us and the British Embassy is in its final throes of being drafted. We are also in meaningful discussions with our friends and colleagues at BBG Abu Dhabi to see where a joint member value proposition can be crafted. It’s not ‘them and us’, it is the ‘stronger together’ approach much mooted in our own businesses that operates in this region. With that in mind, we’ll be heading to Abu Dhabi next week for an after-work joint event around Blockchain and coin offerings and its value for business – please do come and join us, you can sign up here.
Well that’s it from me this week, have a great long weekend today in celebration of the Islamic New Year, and hopefully we’ll see you in Abu Dhabi next week!

View from the Chair - Where did the year go ?
Can you believe it’s only six weeks to Christmas?! Our focus now is all about the upcoming festive season, and it’s been a busy few weeks to get us to this point!
Those of you that have been dedicated in following my weekly ramblings will know that a key focus for our Group has been to strengthen and ‘press the re-set button’ on the relationship between BBG and our British Embassy HMG hosts in the UAE.
It’s been a busy month for the BBG team! On October 1st, as promised, your administrative board, along with focus chairs Terry Willis and Caroline Rowe, met to review and launch our Group’s new operating model.
View from the Chair - A warm Great British welcome…
With his feet firmly under the HMCG desk and having been formally presented to his new Diplomatic post, the BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates is pleased to warmly welcome Andrew Jackson to his new post of Her Majesty’s Consul General, at the British Embassy in Dubai.
Over the years – particularly from a social perspective – I have often heard the British Business Group Dubai & Northern Emirates being described as a ‘family’.
In the context of human society, a family (from the Latin: familia) is a group of people related either by consanguinity (by recognised birth), affinity (by marriage or other relationship), or co-residence (as implied by the etymology of the English word ‘family’).
