View from the Chair - A warm Great British welcome…

With his feet firmly under the HMCG desk and having been formally presented to his new Diplomatic post, the BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates is pleased to warmly welcome Andrew Jackson to his new post of Her Majesty’s Consul General, at the British Embassy in Dubai.

With his feet firmly under the HMCG desk and having been formally presented to his new Diplomatic post, the BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates is pleased to warmly welcome Andrew Jackson to his new post of Her Majesty’s Consul General, at the British Embassy in Dubai.

Did you know that the UAE is the only country in the world to have two British Embassies (or indeed two embassies from any country)? While Her Majesty’s Ambassador keeps residence at the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi, HM Consul General to Dubai & the Northern Emirates resides at the British Embassy in Dubai. This was apparently as a result of both being fully functioning outposts before the union of the UAE on 2nd December, 1971.

I digress though, unlike HMCG, who has wasted no time in connecting with many business leaders and advisors in and beyond Dubai, and we are delighted that his first formal introduction to the British business community will be at our upcoming EXPO2020 event. BBG Dubai members can attend for free and will be welcomed alongside their guests by our Director of Legal & Secretariat, Helen Barrett. This flagship event will include an update from the Expo’s business development & integration team on the project development, timelines for the remaining major procurement packages and an introduction to the Online Marketplace. HMCG Andrew Jackson and UK Expo DIT lead Dominic Beales will focus on the UK’s involvement in Expo 2020 and how British businesses can get involved.

I regret that I am unable to attend in person but can assure you that I have personally welcomed Andrew to his post and we have had in-depth discussions on the exciting new partnership arrangement that is taking place between HMG and BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates to deliver tangible benefits to all stakeholders.

This arrangement assists the Embassy team to deliver real value to the British businesses that they support - across all sectors - as well as enabling you, our BBG Dubai members, to receive early stage market intelligence for opportunities relevant to your business.

Therefore, I would ask that you please join me in giving Andrew and his family a very warm BBG welcome - we look forward to working closely together for mutual member benefit in the future.

Many thanks

John MSV

View from the Chair - In the family way…

Over the years – particularly from a social perspective – I have often heard the British Business Group Dubai & Northern Emirates being described as a ‘family’. In the context of human society, a family (from the Latin: familia) is a group of people related either by consanguinity (by recognised birth), affinity (by marriage or other relationship), or co-residence (as implied by the etymology of the English word ‘family’).
