View from the Chair - Building Bridges...

Those of you that have been dedicated in following my weekly ramblings will know that a key focus for our Group has been to strengthen and ‘press the re-set button’ on the relationship between BBG and our British Embassy HMG hosts in the UAE.

I am delighted to report great progress. Our departing Deputy Consul General, Alastair Long, a great supporter of our modernisation programme for the Group, has handed over the reigns to Sarah Taylor, Deputy Director, Department for International Trade (DIT), who has dived straight into the role with the same welcome enthusiasm as Al. We wish Al every success in his new role as Deputy Trade Commissioner in KSA - watch this space for details of post summer farewell drinks for him!

So, the BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates and Embassy teams have been meeting and building a sustainable, fit-for-purpose, joint participation arrangement - with a myopic view on delivering early and relevant opportunities to members.

Only last week, I represented our group at an Embassy briefing on EXPO2020 which enabled me to go straight into a meeting/discussion the same morning with two of our stalwart BBG Dubai members from the construction industry, plus Joanne our Director of Operations and Andrew Prince, our Director of Focus Chairs. We were able to talk about real opportunities - now - and how we best articulate to relevant members.

At this same EXPO briefing I was blown away by the talent representing British education establishments at their best. A ‘real’ and ‘immediate’ flurry of ideas for BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates to corral and support interests of this sector in supporting EXPO was palpable. If you are in any way connected with British education, please contact the BBG Dubai & Northern Emirates business team on info@bbgdxb.com or 04 3970303 to be included in invitations to specific and relevant introductions to opportunities.

As I write this, I am also joining a delegation from your business team and administrative board to meet our BBG Abu Dhabi counterparts to see how we can collaborate for the greater good of our joint memberships. In line with HMG Department of International Trade strategy we see the benefit in collectively working as a strong and authoritative voice for British business across the UAE. I’ll be sure to let you know how we get on next week.

As always, please do let us know how we can further enable you to succeed in business…

Catch up soon,

JohnMSV

View from the Chair - In the family way…

Over the years – particularly from a social perspective – I have often heard the British Business Group Dubai & Northern Emirates being described as a ‘family’. In the context of human society, a family (from the Latin: familia) is a group of people related either by consanguinity (by recognised birth), affinity (by marriage or other relationship), or co-residence (as implied by the etymology of the English word ‘family’).
