Over the last few months since taking the Chair of the British Business Group Dubai & Northern Emirates, it has struck me how much of an appetitive there is for collaboration in so many areas. We are not an island - we are are highly successful business-to-business forum seeking to maintain and deliver tangible benefits between members.

In just the past couple of weeks I have been invited - and attended - a superbly choreographed event in our capital, Abu Dhabi, as the proud guest of our peers at the BBG Abu Dhabi. It was great to mingle with like-minded members each striving for that all-important value add. The speaker, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, gave a very frank and revealing insight into his historical role, suffice it to say, I will never complain of a hectic travel diary again!

Prior to the event itself I spent some time with fellow Chair of the Abu Dhabi British Business Group - Nick Cochrane-Dyet - to discuss greater knowledge-sharing and initiatives that may be shared for mutual economies of scale.

This was followed up by a meeting with the Group’s director of Communications, Steve Martin - a former colleague on our own committee a mere fifteen years ago - who kindly interviewed me for their next edition of Capital Letter, the BBG Abu Dhabi newsletter that celebrates 20 years in publication this year.

But it’s not just with our peers in Abu Dhabi that we are increasing collaboration, if you read my post last week, you’ll have seen how the Great British Ambassador series has been developing as a UK Government Department of International Trade (DiT) initiative that we were invited to support. This key collaborative effort between our group and HMG resonates at the very heart of our existence - reciprocal interest and furthering of UK trade.

At the same time, we are also working closely with other countries’ business groups and councils across to Dubai, to extend the networking opportunities available to you, our members. Over the course of this last week, we had an incredibly successful inter-business council networking event at Palazzo Versace, co-hosted by the American, French and Canadian Business Councils and with attendance of members from the German, Australian, Austrian, Begian, Danish, Finnish, Iranian, Italian, Jordanian, Lebanese, Malaysian, Netherlands, Russian, Spanish, Swiss and Turkish Business Councils - a truly diverse mix of people brought together to develop their networks and business.

Meanwhile only this morning we held the second annual Inter-Business Council Infrastructure Forum. Another highly successful industry event focussing on the UAE Energy Mix with speakers from Emirates NBD and DEWA amongst others, and in partnership with the French, Canadian, Spanish and Italian Business Councils. This spirit of collaboration will continue next week with the joint networking we are running with the German Business Council at Brunswick Sports Club (more details here).

Finally, the #member4member engagement strategy continues with a very clear focus on ensuring members get the first crack of the whip for other members’ business. If we continue to collaborate and work together our businesses continue to win.
