We are delighted to present the second instalment of our Ambassador Series featuring Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Iraq, Jon Wilks CMG.
This is an exciting time for doing business in Iraq. Daesh has been territorically defeated and the security situation is stabilising; exports of goods and services are increasing and reached £0.5bn in 2017; UKEF entered the market in 2017 and has already completed £1bn of business which will double our exports. Iraq has a new government that wants to increase trade with the UK and we are working with them to clarify its priorities for the next 4 years. Key sectors remain oil & gas; power; infrastructure; security & defence; medical and education but opportunities are opening up in financial & business services; technology; retail; and agriculture. The donor community is increasing its activity here, which is creating opportunities of aid-funded business. In addition, donors are moving into the economic space to create the conditions to stimulate the private sector and improve the ease of doing business. All that being said, this is still a challenging business environment but the British Embassy and DIT Iraq have excellent access across the Government of Iraq and Kurdistan Regional Government and can successfully leverage our relationships to support British companies. 2019 is the Year of Business for the UK in Iraq and to support this effort we will be running a number of trade events/missions as well as hosting high-profile visits including the DIT SoS, Dr Fox.
